V, snacks and vegetables

September 19th 2009 07:09

This week’s column is a little, well, random, but that’s way we like it. Or at least that’s what I think. This week I’ve decided to look at low odour snacks, V, good and bad vegetables and fruit disguised as vegetables.

What are the best foods to eat in a lecture, you know quiet foods that don’t smell?

There’s a few things you can eat during a lecture that don’t smell and aren’t noisy to eat. I suggest eating things like cheese and marmite sandwiches, savoury scones, date scones, fruit smoothies, bananas, mandarins, or dried fruit. They’re pretty nutritious and yummy too.

What do you think of V?

V, the energy drink according to Really Long Link contains 114 calories (478 kilojoules) per 250-gram serve (one regular sized can), 250 milligrams of sodium, and 28 grams of of carbohydrate, which is probably mostly sugar. V is high in niacin, pantothenic acid, and vitamin B6, according to this website, which is good because they are essential nutrients.

These stats make it look ok to drink but it is quite high in sugar and energy for a drink. It would be better if you got your niacin, pantothenic acid and vitamin B6 from whole foods because they provide you with a brunch of other helpful nutrients. Get your niacin from foods like liver, poultry, meat, fish, seafood, grains, nuts and legumes. Niacin is essential because it helps raise HDL “good” cholesterol levels and help your digestive and nervous systems function properly. Pantothenic acid, which is found in most foods, is used to metabolise carbohydrates, fat and protein. Vitamin B6 is found in whole grains and cereals, pork, chicken, avocadoes, spinach, peanut butter, beans, potatoes and beans; is used for protein metabolism, functioning of muscle and nerve cells and formation of red blood cells.

What are the best vegetables to eat at dinner?

Hmm all vegetables are good for you, but there’s vegetables that contain higher levels of the good stuff than others. If you’re trying to up your iron absorption, like me, try boosting your vitamin C intake by eating vegetables like broccoli, potato, spinach, and kumara. If you’re trying to build up your calcium stores then you may want to eat vegetables like spinach, broccoli, silver beet, cabbage, lettuce and baked beans.

What are the worst types of vegetables?

None, except vegetables cooked in lots of animal fat. Animal fat is pretty high in saturated fat and as you may know it’s not very heart friendly. So when you’re cooking a roast, cook your vegetables in separate tray and use plant based fat such as olive oil to stop them from sticking to the tray and use a bit of garlic, lemon pepper, balsamic vinegar or honey or a combination of all four, to bring out the flavour of the vegetables.

Which vegetables are actually fruit?

Pumpkin, tomato, and avocado are fruits that are often mistaken for vegetables. The word pumpkin was derived from the Greek word pepon, which means large melon. Pumpkins are fruit belonging to the species curcubita pepo. The name avocado refers to the fruit of the tree that contains a pit, which may be egg-shaped or spherical, hence the name avocado. Tomatoes are sometimes confused with vegetables because of their savoury flavour.

I hope you enjoyed this column. As usual, if you have any questions, then please send your question to nutrition.advice@gmail.com or leave your question her.
