Surviving vegetarianism: a guide meat eaters
Well I've really run out of things to talk about, so I'm just going to rant on about my favorite nutrition subject - vegetarianism. If you would like me to write about something else, than please feel free to flick me an email with some suggestions for my next column. Alternatively you could stop reading this column, but I would prefer that you continue reading it.
So, your friend has gone to the otherside. They have become part of the 3% minority - vegetarians. So what do you do? Well you don't have to do anything. Just act normal, stay calm. You can't catch vegetarianism, so there's no need to avoid your vegetarian friends.
So, you're having a dinner party or picnic with some vegetarian friends, what do you need to look out for when preparing food? Gelatine and animal fats are too things that vegetarians don't eat and are found in variety of foods. Theres's a few brands of sour cream and cream cheese that contain gelatine, so check the label. Most jelly lollies and jelly contain gelatine as well. You can get jelly made with vegetable gum. My favorite gelatine free brand of jelly and probably the only gelatine free brand in NZ, is Greggs. You might also want to check the label on instant meals like rice risotto, noodles, pasta, wedges, and fries for animal fat. When you do make them a meal, you may want to avoid salads as the main meal, unless they're into super healthy eaters. Have a look online for some meal ideas, www.healthyfood.co.nz is a great place to look for recipes for healthy, tasty, cheap vegetarian meals, a long with many other recipes.
There's a few other things to remember when eating with your vego friends:
*Just because they're vegetarians it doesn't mean that they only eat salads - this is a myth
*If you make a dish with meat in it, say a salad or pasta dish, don't expect your friend to pick out the meat. Most vegos aren't cool with that. Some even prefer that their food is not prepared on the same kitchen equipment as the meat and that their food doesn't touch meat.
*You might want to avoid meat when eating with them. Most vegetarians don't mind, but some do, so ask.
*You might want to avoid saying how tasty your meaty meal is - some people don't mind, but be careful...
If you have any questions then please email me (because I'm running out of ideas) at nutrition.advice@gmail.com or leave me a question here.
