KFC's Double Down
June 3rd 2011 23:34
Ah yes, the KFC Double Down. It’s here in New Zealand for a short visit of five weeks. For those who have not heard of the Double Down, it consists of two Original Recipe chicken fillets, two slices of bacon, two slices of cheese with sauce. It has been dubbed a nutritionist’s nightmare. Being as curious as a cat, I investigated the nutritional value of this burger and compared it with burgers from other burger joints. And this is what I have found...
According to Really Long Link which provides nutritional data on the food items sold in the American KFC restaurants, the Double Down with grilled chicken fillet is weighs 253g, has 480 calories (2000kj), 25g of fat, (9g of that is saturated fat), 1770mg of sodium, and 2g of sugar.
Judging by what the kfc.com says, the Double Down is extremely high is sodium. We shouldn’t be eating more that 2300mg of sodium per day. Keep in mind that many pre-made, processed contains sodium and sometimes the sodium content can be quite high. The energy content is a bit on the high side, especially if you have fries and sugary soda to go with it.
The Double Down with OR filet is even worse. It weighs 248g, has 610 calories (2500kj), 37g total fat, 11g of saturated fat, 1990mg of sodium, 2g of sugar. The energy content is quite high especially if you’re adding chips and fizzy to your meal. The sodium content is through the roof and there’s a bit too much saturated fat.
If you’re going to indulge in one of these burgers, I recommend skipping the fries and coke and have a salad with low fat dressing and water instead. Remember that we need about 8000kj of energy per day, but this varies depending on your age, weight, activity levels, and sex. I would have mentioned the nutritional information on the Double Down burgers sold in New Zealand, however, although the Double Down is available in NZ and is mentioned on the NZ website, they do give us any solid nutritional information. The only information they have was on possible allergens and the ingredients in the burger.
If you compare the Double Down with say a BK Whopper, you will find that the Whopper, weighing in at 286g, is higher energy (2778kj), fat (37g) and sugar (11g). In other words, the Whopper is worse than the Double Down for fat, sugar and energy. However the Whopper is lower in sodium (1017mg).
You could also compare the Double Down with a McChicken burger from McDonalds, which is a chicken breast coated in seasoned tempura, lettuce, McDonald’s sauce and a white sesame seed bun. According to the NZ McDonalds website, this burger weighs about 160g, has 1530kj of energy, 17g of fat (3.2g of saturated fat), 3.7g of sugar and 893mg of sodium. The McChicken is a much better choice, mainly due to the fact that is smaller.
