The National Heart Foundation
I was speaking with a friend the other day about food, which led to the topic of heart disease then onto the National Heart Foundation (NHF) and the National Heart Foundation Tick (NHFT). When I was talking to her, there seemed to be confusion about the Tick and what the NHF does. Well perhaps there’s many more people who are confused about the NHF and the Tick, so naturally I decided a column about the topic would be an excellent idea. In a column I will explain what the NHF is, what they do, who is involved in the NHF and what is the NHFT.
What is it?
The National Heart Foundation is a non-profit organisation which aims to improve heart health in a nation. Most employees in the organisation are volunteers, there is only a handful of people who work at the New Zealand Heart Foundation receive payment and they usually coordinate the NHF events and promotions.
What do they do?
As I said before they promote heart health and general healthy living. They also look at the reasons people develop heart disease and a ways to reduce your risk of developing heart disease. They raise funds each year to support their research into heart disease. NHF provides free information to the public and health professionals on ways we can improve their health as well as free heart health assessments and heart friendly recipes. They send volunteers out to conferences to promote NHF and healthy living
NHF provides funding to students to research heart health related topics such as links between hormones and heart disease, causes and effects of high blood pressure, the causes and treatment of rheumatic fever and the role of hormone replacement.
NHF advises food manufacturers on nutrition. They offer assistance and advice with recipe development, nutritional information and advice on food products, menu assessment for conferences and functions and nutrition education.
NHF provides a service called Heartbeat Catering, which offers a tasty healthy food ideas and nutritional information to chefs and caterers.
They’re involved in cardiac rehabilitation. NFHF provide opportunities for people with heart problems to socialise and take part in exercise that is tailored to their needs. As well as going to seminars on heart related topics.
Who is involved?
Volunteers with an interest in heart health and helping people, nutritionist, health promoters, doctors, and scientists. To become a volunteer contact the NHF through their website, www.nhf.co.nz.
What is the Heart Foundation Tick (HFT)? What does it mean?
The Heart Foundation Tick is a tick (part of the pick the tick programme) which is placed on a food label indicating that it is healthier than other foods in the same category. The foods or drinks need to meet specific guidelines, which have been set by the NHF to obtain the HFT, e.g. less than 10% fat, less than 15% sugar etc. Not all healthy foods have the HFT, however. The food and drink manufacturers need to pay the NHF for these ticks. This money is spent on research into heart health.
