Food swaps

Food swaps!

Feel like a naughty treat but worried about your thighs?

* Swap chocolate cake for a bran muffin. A bran muffin is a better choice because it is higher in fibre, which is good for digestive and cardiovascular health. Oat muffins are also lower in energy, sugar and saturated fat.

* Swap a milkshake with a fruit smoothie. Milkshakes are normally made with whole milk, lots of sugary syrup and ice cream, which makes them high in sugar, fat and energy. Make your own smoothie of fruit, ice and yoghurt for a lower fat, sugar and energy alternative.

* Substitute a McD’s or Burger King burger with a homemade burger. Not only are homemade burgers much nicer but they also more nutritious. Make them out of homemade lean beef patties, wholegrain burger buns, lettuce, tomato, carrot and low fat mayo. Your homemade burgers will be much lower in energy, salt and fat, and higher in fibre.

If I was staving off cake cravings with a bran muffin, I would have to slather that muffin with butter or chocolate or something. Lol.

This is a great idea, and once you get used to the healthier foods you actually start to prefer them to the old version. I now would much prefer to eat an apple than a candy bar -- no will power required.

Hi Krystle

That's great advice and I generally do those things, especially the fruit smoothie for my breakfast.

However there is nothing that will compensate for chocolate when those cravings are strong!!

I'm totally going for that fruit smoothie for lunch. Thanks for that reminder! Now if only bran muffins were available right now...

The smoothies are great, What's Your Story. You can basically put anything healthy in them. I make a batch in the blender, keep it in the fridge and it lasts a couple of days. You just re-blend when you want to drink it

Yeah, I did think of that lol. I guess if you are craving something specific only that specific thing will do. But if you just want something sweet, try something a little more nutritious.
